Day 1 Kapkwai Gate to Kajeri River Camp

Begin the day with breakfast at Kapkwai Canteen while enjoying the sounds of birds in the fresh mountain air. The trek starts from Kapkwai Gate (2,057m) as you make your way toward Kajeri River Camp (3,383m).

Lunch will be served at Tutum Cave Camp (2,667m), named after the largest cave in the area. This location is surrounded by fascinating cultural stories and offers beautiful views over the Sipi Valley.

After lunch, continue trekking through bamboo and heather vegetation zones with distant views of Jackson Peak (4,165m) and Mubiyi Peak (4,215m). Arrive at Kajeri River Camp in the evening where you will enjoy dinner, relax, and share stories around a campfire.

After breakfast, continue the hike toward Manghongho Camp (4,000m). The trail passes through open heather and moorland landscapes, offering wide views of the surrounding mountain scenery.

Lunch will be taken at Muyembe Camp (3,600m), a beautiful spot where you can see Mubiyi Peak, Muyembe Valley, and impressive rock formations shaped by years of weathering.

After crossing the Simu River, continue trekking until you reach Manghongho Camp in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner, warm drinks, and an evening of storytelling around the campfire with your guide.

Start the morning early with breakfast before setting off for the summit. The trek covers about 7 kilometers to reach Wagagai Peak (4,321m), the highest point of Mt. Elgon.

The route follows the edge of the caldera and offers views of Jackson Peak, Sironko Valley, and the vast volcanic crater that defines Mt. Elgon’s landscape.

At the summit, take time to rest and enjoy views stretching toward Sudek and Katoibosi peaks in Kenya, Swam Gorge, and Lwakhakha Valley. After celebrating your achievement, descend about 7 kilometers to Dubii Camp (3,550m). Here you will enjoy tea, snacks, and a cultural evening around the campfire.

After breakfast, begin the descent from Dubii Camp toward Bushiyi Gate. Along the way, stop at Shilok Camp for a short break and enjoy views of Nabumbogo Cliff.

Upon reaching Bushiyi Gate, complete the check-out process and receive your trekking certificates as a record of your successful hike.
